How to estimate expected date of delivery

Posted By Dr. Deepti Asthana on 01-11-2021

You may have previously approximated your baby's due date if you know the beginning day of your last menstrual cycle. During your initial prenatal appointment, your doctor will ask you questions to try to determine your due date as exactly as possible.

Knowing your baby's due date will allow your provider to more correctly track your baby's development. Because some laboratory tests alter during your pregnancy, knowing your exact due date can help your provider to properly watch these tests and, if necessary, treat premature labour. Although the unborn infant spends around 37 weeks in the uterus (womb), the typical duration of pregnancy, or gestation, is 40 weeks. This is due to the fact that pregnancy is measured from the first day of the woman's last menstruation, rather than the day of conception, which usually happens two weeks later, followed by five to seven days before the embryo settles in the uterus. Because some women are unclear of the date of their last menstruation (perhaps owing to irregular periods), a pregnancy is considered full term if the baby is born between 37 and 42 weeks beyond the predicted due date.

A baby born before week 37 is termed preterm, whereas a baby delivered beyond week 42 is called late. In many circumstances, if a baby is late, labour will be induced.

Length of gestation

The typical human gestation period lasts 280 days, or 40 weeks, beginning with the first day of the woman's last menstrual cycle. The projected date of confinement is the medical phrase for the due date (EDC). However, only approximately 4% of women give birth while taking their EDC. There are several online pregnancy calculators that can tell you when your baby is due if you enter the date of your last period's first day.

To determine the due date, just add seven days to the beginning day of your previous period, then add nine months. For example, if the starting day of your last period was 1 February, add seven days (8 February), then nine months for an 8 November due date.

How Is My Due Date Calculated?

Your due date is normally 280 days (40 weeks or around 10 months – sometimes known as 10 lunar months) from the first day of your last menstruation. However, if your periods are irregular or do not occur every 28 days, your due date may deviate from the "280-day norm." Your doctor may arrange an ultrasound to estimate your due date more precisely.

Please notify your health care doctor if you are positive of your conception date (the day you became pregnant). This information might help you determine your approximate delivery date (EDD).

A full-term pregnancy lasts between 37 and 40 weeks and 6 days, therefore your actual date of delivery may vary from your projected date of delivery, also known as the estimated day of confinement, or EDC. Only a small percentage of infants are delivered on their due dates. Typically, about 5% of women give birth on their due date.

Choosing a Baby's Due Date

Because of irregular menstrual cycles, some women are unsure of when they conceived. Some indicators of gestational duration include:

Examination using an ultrasound (especially when performed between six and 12 weeks) On vaginal or abdominal examination, the size of the uterus is measured. The first moment foetal movements are felt (an approximate guide only).

Ultrasound during pregnancy

A pregnancy ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses high frequency sound waves to assess the unborn baby and the mother's reproductive organs. The basic process for a pregnancy ultrasound involves the following steps:

The transducer, a tiny hand-held equipment, is placed on the woman's abdomen by the operator.

The transducer is moved over the abdominal cavity. Sound waves bounce off interior structures (including the baby) and return to the transducer. On a display, the sound waves are subsequently converted into a two-dimensional image. The transmission of sound waves is neither felt or heard by the mother.

The operator can determine the baby's gestational age by measuring body components such as head size and long bone length.

Pregnancy ultrasound's diagnostic applications

Pregnancy ultrasounds are used to identify a variety of diseases, in addition to determining the unborn baby's due date.

  • Multiple foetus
  • The baby's health issues
  • Ectopic pregnancy (the embryo lodges in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus)
  • Placental abnormalities, such as placenta praevia, in which the placenta is positioned over the womb's neck (cervix)
  • The reproductive organs of the mother's health.
  • Premature babies

Premature birth is defined as a baby born before week 37. The baby's chances of survival are determined by his or her degree of preterm. The closer to term (estimated date of confinement, or EDC) the baby is delivered, the better its chances of survival - with proper medical care, virtually all newborns survive after 34 weeks gestation.

Premature newborns often suffer from a variety of health issues caused by undeveloped internal organs. Respiratory problems and a higher vulnerability to infection are prevalent.

Premature labour often has no recognised cause; nevertheless, some maternal risk factors may include:

  • Using drinking or smoking when pregnant
  • Prior to pregnancy, you had a low body weight.
  • Inadequate pregnancy weight gain
  • There is no prenatal care.
  • Emotional distress
  • Placenta issues, such as placenta praevia, are common.
  • Diabetes and congestive heart failure are two examples of illnesses.
  • Infections like syphilis
  • Overdue babies

Five out of every hundred infants will be late, or longer than 42 weeks pregnant. Usually monitored antenatal cases are not allowed to go post due date of delivery.

After about 38 weeks, the placenta begins to degrade, which means that an overdue baby may not get enough oxygen. A baby that is late may potentially become too big for vaginal birth. In most cases, an overdue baby will be induced. Induction techniques include the following:

  • Vaginal prostaglandin gel - to aid in cervix dilation.
  • Amniotomy - a procedure for breaking the waters, often known as an artificial rupture of membranes (ARM)
  • Oxytocin - an intravenous injection of a synthetic version of this hormone is used to trigger uterine contractions.
