Is vaginoplasty a painful procedure?

Posted By Dr. Deepti Asthana on 14-10-2021

What is Vaginoplasty?

Any surgical procedure that results in the building or reconstruction of the vagina is referred to as a vaginoplasty. It's a kind of genitoplasty. Pelvic organ prolapse is frequently treated with one or more vaginal procedures. Following the treatment or excision of malignant growths or abscesses, a vaginoplasty may be required to restore normal vaginal anatomy and function. Vaginal surgery is performed to repair congenital abnormalities of the vagina, urethra, and rectum. It will treat urinary bladder protrusion into the vagina (cystocele) and rectum protrusion into the vagina (rectocele).

Is vaginoplasty a painful procedure? How much downtime can I expect?

The majority of patients choose to have this surgery done under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain. Any pain or discomfort you may have following your operation will be properly controlled with medication supplied by your surgeon and will usually subside within a few days.

You may suffer some mild irritation and swelling, but this should subside in one or two weeks. Any stitches will dissolve, so they will not need to be removed, but you will need to see a specialist nurse for wound care one week after surgery. Many of the patients are able to return to work after one week, but you may need two weeks. You must avoid exercise and sexual activity until you are totally healed (around 6 weeks).

Is Vaginoplasty Recovery Painful?

Vaginoplasty surgery is not thought to be particularly painful because it is frequently performed under general anaesthesia. Recent medical advancements employ the most up-to-date anaesthetic technology to reduce downtime and allow our patients to return home the same day of their operation.

A patient will most likely suffer discomfort throughout the healing period since this delicate region will be uncomfortable, swollen, and bruised right after surgery. If the after-care recommendations are followed correctly, a full recovery can be expected in six weeks.

How Long Does A Vaginoplasty Take To Heal?

Swelling, discomfort, and bruising are common side effects of surgery, but they should go away in a week or two. A patient should be able to move about comfortably within a few days.

Following a vaginoplasty, it is recommended that you take a week off work to recover. A week following the surgery, the patient should be able to drive. Between 2 and 4 weeks following surgery, you can start exercising again, including going to the gym. Between 4 and 6 weeks following surgery, a patient should avoid sexual activity (vaginal penetration). By 6 weeks, a vaginoplasty should be entirely recovered. Following vaginoplasty, it is suggested that the patient sleeps on their back for four weeks.

Vaginal tightening can also be done in conjunction with a vaginal rejuvenation procedure. Perineal surgery (correcting the region between the vagina and the rectum), labiaplasty (reshaping and decreasing protrusion of the labia), or a simple perineum and pelvic floor tightening may also be performed as part of this treatment. A vaginal rejuvenation has the same recovery period as a vaginoplasty - a full recovery should be expected in 6 weeks.

Prior to vaginoplasty, the surgeon will advise the patient to quit smoking, drinking, and taking aspirin or other drugs. This is because these variables can interfere with or slow down the healing process and should be avoided. When these may be resumed, the surgeon will discuss it with the patient.

After their vaginoplasty, a patient should consider enlisting the aid of family and friends to allow them to relax as much as possible, which will help them heal faster.

There are also a variety of additional things a person may do to aid in the rehabilitation process. Ice packs will assist to reduce swelling in the genital area, and wearing loose clothing is suggested to avoid rubbing and aggravating the area, which will cause more discomfort. Tampons should be avoided by anybody who has had a vaginoplasty until the wound has healed fully. Instead of any internal sanitary protection, sanitary towels should be utilised.

Will I Lose Sensation After a Vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty restores a woman's vagina to its pre-childbirth condition. The technique increases the tone, strength, and control of the vaginal muscles, which frequently improves sensitivity and sexual pleasure. However, because desire, arousal, and orgasm are complicated, highly individualised responses, they are influenced by emotional and interpersonal variables as well as visual ones. Vaginoplasty does not ensure increased sexual desire. The treatment also aids in the improvement or elimination of mild urine incontinence induced by childbirth or the ageing process.

It is not unusual to have changed sensations after vaginoplasty therapy. This might appear as greater sensitivity or pain, or as a complete lack of sensation (numbness) in the affected region. These sensory alterations generally last a few weeks after surgery. However, if they continue, the patient should notify their doctor since, in certain rare situations, these sensory alterations may be permanent. However, we want to emphasise that this is quite unusual, and there are no special hazards to be concerned about. During your appointment, the surgeon will go over the vaginoplasty surgery in detail with you.

Is it possible to walk after a vaginoplasty?

Within a day following vaginoplasty, we would expect a patient to be relatively functional. After a few days, a patient will be able to walk about freely. It is critical that you listen to your body and stop from pushing yourself, since this might be detrimental to the healing process.

What Is the Scar Like After a Vaginoplasty?

Because vaginoplasty is a treatment performed on the interior of the body, there will be no visible external scars.

The procedure is intended to tighten the vagina. To do this, the surgeon uses dissolvable sutures to together the strained muscle at the rear of the vagina, shrinking it. The extra vaginal lining is then removed, and the soft tissues around the uterus are tightened. Because the incision sites are completely inside, they are highly discrete.
